Digital Story Telling

Digital Storytelling Part 1 by Michael Richards. Then link to Part 2.

“Faceplant” – computer screens down/angled to give attention to teacher.

Computational Thinking – input and output
The Wonky Donky – starting with the output on the last page. Then rereading linking the input to the output. Are we there yet? No.
At the end, no errors in the code.
Books with process – Hairy McLeary, Berestain Bears Spooky House on the hill?

Game 1: Orientating Year – Chess board game. 2 peoples initials. Give instructions to get from A to B.

Game 2: Code your buddies out of the room. Only 2 instructions – Go and TL (turn left).

What technology is in a library? Data, keywords, scanning – input and outputs.
Using AUTHENTIC CONTEXTS. Folders help us to get organised. Alphabetical order helps to organise our files.

Decomposition
Breaking it down into small steps.
Joke Books

Pattern Recognition  Stories are a great way to show this.
What are the similarities in fairy tales for examples? Usually a villain who doesn’t succeed, a hero, a problem etc. Flip the script books show the break in the pattern.

Game: “Can you code Seprion to their bag to get their lunch?” Students to give instructions, but you can limit it eg. Person can only go left. Quarter turns, 270 degress etc.

Algorithm Design: Starting to use common language.
Hour of Code

Application to my classroom:
·      Reading The Wonky Donkey and start with output, then link to input.
·      Coding with chess board paper.
·      Coding students around the room. (Only using the codes of Go and Turn Left)
·      Instructional writing – making a peanut butter sandwich etc. Being specific with language.
·      Teaching students specific skills eg. How to make a record a video. How to delete a video. Etc. You think students know everything already, but there is still stuff they will need to specifically learn.
·      Encouraging chn to be creators, not just consumers
·      Using HP Reveal (old Aurasma) for augmented reality on book reviews. Stick a sticker to books with reviews on them.
·      Old ipads not used can go to the library for HP reveal and QR codes for reviews and more information.
·      Using library time for specific teaching time of digital technology etc.
