Jo Knox - Mult/Div PD

Jo Knox - Sherwood Primary - June 2018
Multiplication and Division strategies using rich tasks

Resources shared with the group
Grapes of Math (PDF online) Online book
Bedtime Maths Book - check out for Library

Things to work on for mixed ability grouping
Students to write down other people’s strategies - not just verbal share.
Have options for students to always be able to opt in to workshops.
Have set workshops for the week

Skip counting - just skipping numbers - make it into movements to introduce for students that aren’t getting it.
Stage 6 is to commit times tables to memory - Have times tables games

Instead of group boxes - have addition practise boxes, subtraction, multiplication, division etc.
Game options - Salute - Sergeant major, plus 2 soldiers - 3 goes each, then switch. Addition too, and could do cards 1 - 5 first. Could just do two people - one person holds up card, other flicks it up, and caller calls it out, so person is just competing against themselves.

Teach students to think “What facts do I know already?” and to work from there.
Eg. 8 x 6 = 10 x 6 = 60 minus 2 groups of 6.
60 - 12 = 48
Or 8 x 5 = 40, plus another group of 8 = 48
Focus on 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Whole class problem solving:

  1. Launch the problem - make it relevant and memorable so they can refer back to it for mathematical thinking.
  2. What is the problem asking them to do? Not the answer - just what needs to be found out. Have students identify keywords - circle them. Could take the numbers out so they know what you are asking them to do. This takes away the desire for students to just try to answer it.
  3. Independent think time - to stop other children from always dominating
  4. Shared thinking time - small groups a lot less intimidating to share with peers. Teach the students how to be a part of a group - cooperation, active listening, teacher to model as well, equal being involved, thinking group rules - write up from students ideas. Be explicit. Thinking group rules - speakers job to explain and justify so that everyone understands; listeners job to actively listen and ask questions to make sense of what is being said; everyone’s job is to have a go and support each other, and we are allowed to ‘friendly disagree’.
  5. Whole class sharing: Congress - moving the thinking of the whole group along (not necessarily the most sophisticated answer. T to explicitly pick groups after roving around, who will share their ideas. 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 = 80 eg. Why did you add? Cos I can’t do times tables. Well, this group did 20 x 4, that’s the same etc. Penny drops!
  6. Students self reflect on where they are at.

Stage 7 problems
Going to the hot pools - tickets are $49 each, 5 people going. Only 1 student got it first. From how students worked it out on their whiteboards Jo could see they working it out by 40 + 40 + 40 etc, and 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 etc. She notice that rounding to $50 wasn’t best thing to learn, but solving by 10’s would be better. Did lesson on that, with materials - yellow tens and ones in cups, and then the next problem was with imaging. In the cups, but behind book.

88 x 5 - can double and half - 44 x 10 = 440 (proportional adjustment)
880 x 10 = 880, then half it.
90 x 5 = 500, then take away 12 x 5 = 60; 500 - 60 = 440 (Rounding and compensation)
Place value partitioning - 80 x 5, 8 x 5

39 + 65 = 106 (add 1 to first part, then to the other)
Is the same as 40 + 66 = 106

32 x 17 - Material Masters - Dotty arrays
Model what it looks like on dotty arrays.

Jo’s long algorithm - 30 and 2 multiplied by 10 and 7, multiply them all like she did on board. Place value must be solid for this, beyond single digit eg. 28 x 4.

Look at making jelly cups for measuring in mls…….
Green - 99mls
Yellow - 54 mls
Red - 23 mls
If they make 8 cups, how many mls of each colour do they need? Measuring

To do’s to email to myself.
  • Mult bingo to print
  • Teach kids Salute - start with addition. Then chn who want to move up to multiplication to go together.
  • Thinking thumbs, hand on chests when ready to answer - instead of hands up, then sweet as sign when agree.
  • Look at material masters for Stg 6/7 Mario and Ariel, Faith, Marnei, Maxx?? Material masters 6-6b Multiplication Roundabout
