Coaching vs. Mentoring

Coaching PD – with Teresa Hannard
13th August, 2018

Coaching is a one to one conversation, self directed learning, taking personal responsibility for your pedagogy, retains talent etc.

Task – 2 people are back to back and one has to describe a picture, and the other has to draw it, without asking questions. Match up answers. Then swap and the other person describes a picture but their partner can ask questions.
Highlights how communication and conversation is so important.

Difference between mentoring and coaching.
Mentoring – it’s more direct and more telling, giving information, giving advice, sharing opinions. vs coaching clarifying, revoicing, collaborating, active listening, asking questions, empathising, and understanding someone’s point of view.

You have to have a growth mindset with coaching. What are you bringing to the coaching session that day? Be fresh and open, ready to discuss.

Skills needed: active listening, asking open ended questions.

Porblem Talk vs Solution Talk – Solution talk changes the perspective, makes the focus more positive and forward moving.

G – goals
R – reality
O – options
W – What will you do?
T – tactics
H – Habits
